Write a Powerful Letter

Writing persuasive letters to elected officials is important. Our representatives need to know that real people care about the continued availability of the full range of professionally-outfitted river trips in the Grand Canyon.

THE BEST LETTERS ARE:

Short and focused -- keep your letter to one page and highlight just your central points. Identify the issue in the first paragraph. Do not overwhelm your reader with too much detail or extraneous information.

Meaningful on a personal basis -- explain why the issues you raise are important to you and your family, drawing a clear connection to the public policy issue at hand as you do so. If you voted for or generally support the official, mention it in your letter.

Typewritten and signed -- your letter won't have much impact or earn a serious response if it is illegible or difficult to read.

Request a reply -- expressly ask your representative for a response to your letter that provides his or her views on the issue. Provide a return address both on your envelope and on the letter itself.
